Scholarship Fund Luncheon
|
|
The annual luncheon to raise funds for scholarships featured both a silent auction and a raffle table. The program included an informal appraisal by Kay Chambers and Todd Stephenson of antiques brought by members and guests. Bridge and canasta followed. The luncheon raised $2650 and the Scholarship Challenge raised $1645. The combined total of $4295 enables our branch to provide 5 scholarships to exceptional women of limited means who have completed their first two years of college.

Gayla Williams, Barbara Baldwin, Benita Page, and Suzie Lisio
presented the check at AAUW’s Scholarship Luncheon.
|
Benita Page, Co-President of the Rancho Bernardo branch of the American Association of University Women and a member of the Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club, challenged AAUW members to raise $500 to match her contribution of $500 and RB Rotary Club's Matching Gift of $500 to fund the AAUW-RB scholarship fund. The AAUW-RB branch coordinates with Palomar Community College and CSU San Marcos to select the most deserving candidates for scholarships each year. As a result of the challenge, $1,645.00 was raised.

Linda Mandrayar travels to India frequently with her Indian-born husband. She spoke to us about the plight of widows in India. She is co-producer of a feature film, White Rainbow, which portrays this little-known problem.

Topics included conservatorships/guardians, case managers, advanced health care directive and how to choose a successor trustee.

September Luncheon Meeting
Samples of the Dead Sea Scrolls are coming to San Diego next summer. Our September speaker was Janet Redding, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, San Diego Natural History Museum. She gave a very exciting presentation about the scrolls and some behind-the-scenes stories of mounting such an exhibition. |

Women's Community Conference
AAUW-RB and Poway-Peñasquitos Branches sponsored a very infomative and successful program - Human Trafficking & Child Prostitution: Stop Violence Against Women and Children. The program ran from 9 a.m. to noon at the Seven Oaks Community Center, 16789 Bernardo Oaks Drive, Rancho Bernardo.

February 2006 Meeting
Our featured speaker for February was Anne Hoiberg, a research psychologist and department head for the U.S. Federal Government at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego for 25 years. She talked about women in the 21st century.

January Meeting
In January, Patricia Alvarez, founder and director of the outreach program "From the Inside Out," spoke to us about the program that introduces at-risk teens and their parents to inmates at Donovan Prison. She was joined in the presentation by former inmate Reggie Washington.

September Meeting
The September luncheon meeting at the Bernardo Winery was a real treat. Not only was the catered luncheon delicious, but we enjoyed an informative presentation about the early history of Rancho Bernardo given by Susan Floyd, Director of the RB Historical Society Museum.
