Local Scholarship Fund
Our branch is particularly proud of the success of its Scholarship Fund to aid exceptional women of limited means in seeking a four-year degree after completing their initial two years in college.
Our branch Education Committee coordinates with Palomar Community College and Cal State San Marcos to select about four of their most deserving candidates for scholarships of up to $1,000 each. Many of our recipients are re-entry students; often single mothers, striving to provide a better life for themselves and their children through education. These women are focused and determined to succeed.
Applications are available at the individual college’s Office of Financial Aid. The colleges provide the names and resumes of possible recipients to the Branch Scholarships Chair. Individual interviews, successful college work, and financial need determine our final selection.
Our primary sources of funding are from a percentage of grocery purchases at local markets and from an annual Scholarship Luncheon. We have also on occasion been able to obtain matching funds for scholarships. From the inception of the program through June, 2006 the Rancho Bernardo Branch has given scholarships totaling $66,450. We have awarded five $1200 scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Our hugely successful Scholarship Luncheon in 2002 was based on a Victorian Theme. All who attended enjoyed bridge, canasta, and a visit from “Queen Victoria.”
