ABOUT AAUW

The American Association of University Women is a national organization that promotes education and equity for all women and girls.

It is composed of three corporations: 

AAUW, a 100,000-member organization with more than 1,300 branches in 50 states, is the oldest and largest national organization working for equity and advancement of women. AAUW is a member of the International Federation of University Women, serving 67 countries. Thus, AAUW membership automatically assures IFUW membership.
   

AAUW EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION (EF), a non-profit, tax-exempt foundation, awards and administers fellowships, grants, and funding for special projects to outstanding graduate women around the globe. Among the various programs it administers is the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund that offers fellowships to public school K-12 teachers.

   

AAUW LEGAL ADVOCACY FUND (LAF), also a non-profit, tax-exempt foundation, provides funds and a support system for women, primarily teachers and professors, seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination in colleges and universities.

   
 

AAUW History 

AAUW was founded in 1881 and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. From the beginning of its history, it has been active in the legislative process. Issues such as education, health care, reproductive choice, childcare, pay equity and discrimination against women have been addressed.

With education as its primary focus, AAUW founded the Educational Foundation in 1958 to offer financial support to graduate women.

With sex discrimination against women also high on its list of major injustices, AAUW founded the Legal Advocacy Fund in 1981 to address the issue of sex discrimination in colleges and universities.
